Keynote Addresses

These presentations will offer key insights to understanding the general panorama of indigenous, bilingual, intercultural education and will serve as points of reference en the pedagogical workshops. The themes will include:

  • Comparative analysis of the educational situation of indigenous people of the hemisphere
  • The challenge of globalization en the development of indigenous, bilingual, education en the Americas
  • The child and the development of bilingualism

General Forums

The general forums will permit participation of national and international specialists covering topics that are convergent with the objectives of the event. Following presentations by the panel is a period of analysis and debate among a larger group of invited specialists.

Symposia

The symposia are opportunities for participants and specialists to exchange and interact en small groups over selected themes of common interest.

The symposia and the forums will take up the following themes:

  • Achievements and obstacles of indigenous bilingual, intercultural, education from a technical and pedagogical perspective
  • Indigenous bilingual intercultural education and social support
  • Analysis of indigenous language rights
  • Indigenous, bilingual, intercultural education as State policy and its management
  • Historical overview of educational reform en Latin America
  • The cost benefit of indigenous, bilingual, intercultural education to the State
  • The intercultural curriculum and the non-indigenous student
  • Research on the benefits and the impact of bilingual education
  • The need for exchange and collaboration between the indigenous education actors of the Americas to establish channels of solidarity.

Pedagogical Workshops

The pedagogical workshops are activities for interaction and learning. Indigenous, bilingual, intercultural education will be presented through various themes and modalities. These will include: model classrooms, methods training workshops, description of projects and pedagogical clinics.

  • Methods Training Workshops: two hour activities where participants learn new methods and strategies interactively.
  • Model Classrooms: one hour activities where participants become informed of various forms of interaction between teachers and students (with students or video).
  • Project Descriptions: one hour activities where participants become familiarized with successful projects' methodologies, contexts, organization, materials and results.
  • Pedagogical Clinics: one hour activities that will be facilitated by a specialist, but where participants will present specific cases which they propose for discussion and analysis.

Workshop speakers will present on the following topics:

  • Application of bilingual, intercultural methods
  • Experiences on the application of techniques and methods with bilingual in-service teachers
  • Production and elaboration of traditional and non-traditional education materials
  • The use of technology en education
  • Innovative research based on indigenous bilingual education
  • Innovative modalities of indigenous bilingual education throughout grade levels
  • Integration of culture en the intercultural education curriculum
  • Evaluation and results of bilingual education programs and their students
  • Indigenous, bilingual, intercultural education and literacy development
  • Parent and community participation en indigenous, bilingual, intercultural education programs
  • Revitalization of indigenous languages through bilingual education
  • Second language learning and the content areas
  • Use of the various bilingual education models and their contexts
  • Bilingual education teachers as researchers of their own practice

Indigenous Parliament of America

The Indigenous Parliament of America will hold its meeting concurrent with the rest of the Fair and will address the topic of indigenous bilingual education from the legislative financial perspective. It is hoped that conclusions will point toward concrete commitments that support the educational development of indigenous people en the hemisphere.

Presentation of Proposal to the Indigenous Parliament

Conclusions of the work sessions of the proposal to the Indigenous Parliament will be presented to the general assembly for review on the final morning and will be presented later that day to the Indigenous Parliament of America.

Exposition of Educational Materials

Traditional and non-traditional educational materials will be available for display and sale during the Fair. Educational programs as well as distributors of educational materials are invited to participate.
